Beautiful Bargains

Well, talk about bargain central! I popped into Tesco this morning on my way to work, as I had forgotten my eyebrow pencil and I am going to straight to an Awards Ceremony for my company straight after work. Which I am incredibly excited about – it is at The Luton Hoo 5 Star Hotel, we get dinner, drinks and a night’s stay! Can’t wait to leave work and get up there for some “me” time.

Anyway, I digress… Whilst perusing the cosmetics aisle of Tesco looking for my eyebrow pencil, I saw 3 massive boxes FULL of sale F&F and Barbara Daly make up! Ranging from 50p to £3 per item! Heaven! As you might have guessed, I have a little bit of a make up problem, I suppose it is like my guilty pleasure. Well I swiftly put back my Rimmel pencil and replaced it with a bargain F&F brow pencil priced at just £1!! Exactly the same, just with no brush on the end. I also got:

F&F Enlighten me concealer - £1
Awaken your eyes with this creamy under eye concealer in shade 2. Apply F&F Enlighten me concealer with the built-in brush to reduce the appearance of dark under eye circles. Before use, prime the pen by twisting the base until a small amount of Enlighten me becomes visible on the brush.

This is like the YSL Touche Eclat. Very creamy, good coverage but not heavy.

F&F Lips (gloss) - 50p
This pure shine lip gloss adds soft colour to your lips. Apply the super glossy Baby blush shade alone or over lip colour for a flawless finish. The perfect size to pop into your bag for touch-ups, apply your F&F lipgloss directly from the wand applicator.

A very pretty pink colour, slightly too sticky for my liking, so one to wear when your hair is up. F&F

Cream Blush - £1
Wake up your skin with a natural hint of colour. F&F cream blush in Precious pink gives any tired face a lift. Apply the blush with fingertips and dab on to your skin with a patting motion for a flattering flush of subtle colour.

Looks really pink in the dish, but once I applied with my fingers to the apples of my cheek, was a really soft, pink glow, very fresh looking.

F&F Galaxy Glow - £1 (£9.50 on the website!)
The ultimate finish touch for your skin, F&F Galaxy glow highlighter adds a glow to dull, tired looking skin. Packed with ultra fine iridescent pearls, it can be applied all over the face or to partial areas. This versatile highlighter can be worn alone to brighten the complexion or over make-up

I’ve not tried this on my face yet, but put a bit on my hand, feels lovely and smooth, would be nice to wear on naked skin if you didn’t want to wear any foundation (like if you had a glow from a tan, fake or otherwise!)

F&F Eyes (eyeshadow) – 50p
A baked eye shadow with a shimmer and shine finish for any occasion, F&F Metallics eyeshadow, in this stunning Oyster shell colour has great staying power. The wet or dry formula offers 2 different effects, use it wet for a high impact look or dry for a beautiful soft sheen.

Luckily I wore no make up to work today, as I got to try this at my desk! It is beautiful, reminds me of MAC nylon, high pigmentation, blended well with my fingers.

Barbara Daly See Through Lip Gloss - £2
Part of the beauty collection by legendary make-up artist Barbara Daly, this Lip glaze is a translucent gloss for beautifully shiny lips. With a subtle hint of Chiffon colour, this lip glaze leaves a flawless, moisturised and glossy finish Lovely gloss!

Feels really moisturising and has a pinky, almost iridescent colour.

F&F Galaxy Shine - £1
Wake up your skin with maximum glow with F&F Galaxy Shine highlighter. This pearl packed shimmer allows for a versatile application using a sponge, brush or fingertips. Use on cheeks, face and body for stunning, shimmery highlights.

Again, I’ve not tried this one, but tried it on my hand, very pinky iridescent, will be perfect as a highlighter on the cheek and brow bones. Think Benefit High Beam, but with a more iridescent finish.

From Vivo: Vivo VPL Volume & Length Mascara – 50p
Fibre formulation adds instant length to lashes coupled with volume brush technology to get the ultimate VPL

Now, this is my one disappointing buy. But it was only 50p. I think it might be “off” as the tube felt empty when getting the wand out, very dry and hardly anything went on my lashes. Which is a real shame as the brush looks amazing, and seems like it would do a really good job if the actual mascara wasn’t dried up! Its original price of £3.49 – and you can still purchase on line through Vivo, might be worth another go.

And not in the sale: Collection Glam Crystals Dazzling Gel Liner - £3
Tiny glitter particles suspended in a clear, quick-drying gel, Includes precision brush for easy application, Wear over eye shadow or alone with mascara.

WOW, I love this! I thought it might have been a bit OTT for the office, but I just had to try it! I teamed it with the Oyster eyeshadow above, and it is beautiful. My boss commented on how lovely my eyes looked. My eyes are brown/hazel and the eyeshadow/glitter are goldy so it really brings out the colour of my eyes, makes them look really bright and pretty. Loving the sparkle of the eyeliner!

What a way to start the weekend! I’m a happy bunny!

Happy Friday!

Start spreading the news...

It was my husbands 30th Birthday last week, and as a surprise, I booked a trip to The Big Apple, The Empire State, NYC, NEW YORK!!  I booked it in July, so how i managed to keep it a secret for over 6 months i don't know!  Everything was done in secret, i'd booked the time off with his boss, tickets booked, hotel arranged, ESTAS purchased, dollars exchanged - so exciting!

A very excited birthday boy!

The night before his birthday, i told him that he didnt have to go to work in the morning and that i had something planned for him.  In the middle of the night i decorated the living room, put the bubbly in the fridge and got prepared for the birthday boy!

Lounge all decorated

2 bottles of bubbly before lunch - oops!

When he opened his card, he couldnt believe it!  We were going to NYC in the morning!  We had such a lovely day, we went to The Grove for lunch, which was incredible, we were treated like kings!  Well worth a visit for a special occasion, we dined in The Stables restaurant - their website can be found here drank bubbly all day, packed our cases and his family came over in the evening.  His sisters made him such a fantastic cake!

Jamie's beautiful sisters and the fantastic cake

We were both so excited when we went to bed that night, i dont think we slept much and when the alarm went off at 4.30am it was time to get ready.  We flew with BA from LHR T5, the flight was on time, no issues, and we landed safely at JFK just after 12 noon.  Straight in a yellow taxi to the hotel.

Us on the flight

We stayed at The Milford Times Square.  A cheap and cheerful, basic, modern hotel in a prime location in the Theatre District.  We went straight to the Empire State Building after stopping at a deli for a spot of lunch)  The View from the Empire State 86th Observatory Deck was incredible, 360 degree views of Manhattan.  By the time we got there, dusk was settling and all the lights looked so beautiful.

View from the Empire State Building

We did so much in such a short space of time, Jamie is a massive Sopranos fan, so we went to Little Italy, did some shopping in Macy's, spent a fortune in Victorias Secret, walked around Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, NY Public Library, Ground Zero, Tiffanys!!!!  We also made our own custom Muppett in FAO Schwarz, so much fun!  We met some lovely locals in a bar we popped in to for a well needed rest after walking around Bloomies. The bar is The Bar Room, at 117 East 60th Street between Lexington and Park their website can be found here.  Special thanks to Harry for the amazing choclate pudding he gave us as a treat.

A few moments from The Bar Room

Flat irons - location of The Bar Room

We only meant to stop for a one drink, then staggered out 6 hours later and got pretzels and hot dogs!

Pretzels!

Another must visit for food is Carmines Website in Times Square 200 West 44th Street.  AMAZING food, the portions are huge - so share!  Our main would have easily fed 4 people! It was packed - a good sign!
We also went to the flicks in Times Square, we saw Paranormal Activity - so funny in the cinema, they Americans get so in to the film, so much screaming!!

Paranormal Activity in Times Square

We were incredibly sad to leave, especially only staying for 3 nights, but we will be returning, hopefully this year... Fingers crossed!

NYE Sparkly Lipglosses!

Whilst perusing Instagram, I came across a beautiful lip that i wanted to re-create for NYE. I was going for statement eyes so wanted a neutral lip with that little bit extra, this was perfect!

Stunning!

I already had the lipstick i was going to use underneath - MUA £1 Matte Lipstick Totally Nude with my Mac Naked Lip Pencil £12 but i didnt have the sparkly for the top coat!

So, i went shopping!  I tried on about 6 different glosses, including a gorgeous one from Bobbi Brown - Bare Sparkle £18 but it wasnt quite right.  I then found a stunning one from Lancôme - Color Fever Gloss in sparkling Light £20 but the hefty price tag put me off (for a gloss that i may potentially lose after a few vinos), so i went searching for a dupe.  And i found one!

Barry M display in Superdrug

Barry M do an almost identical version of the Lancome one and it is a quarter of the price! Lip Gloss Wand - Strawberries and Cream £4.49 It is slightly less sparkly, but not so much you would notice.
It goes on smooth, smells delicious and isnt that sticky!  I purchased from Superdrug, but have put the link direct to Barry M's website above.

Very sparkly!
Smells great

It goes to show that if you do some research and take your time, you can often find a fab dupe and save some money!

Although i didnt end up saving much as i bought this beautiful glitter nail polish as well!  It is the Nicole by OPI range, part of the Modern Family Collection. Haley Good Lookin' £7.99 I got mine from Superdrug too pretty and girly not to take it home with me! I will probably layer it with  OPI's Mod About You.

Very glittery, perfect for layering

So, Happy New Year lovely people.  Hope 2014 brings you everything you wish for.  Hope you all had a good night brining in the New Year!

Rudolf

HAPPY FRIDAY!

It is now 12 days before Christmas, and i can officially start getting excited about the forthcoming festive season!  As today, 12 days before Christmas, you can traditionally put your Christmas tree up, and today is also a bonus as its Christmas Jumper Day!

Anyone thats not heard of Christmas Jumper Day before, its a bit like the Wear it Pink day for Breast Cancer research, only this time you wear your Christmas Jumper (obvs) and it is for Save the Children:
Save the Children Website

They say:
JOIN THE WOOLLY REVOLUTION!
Make the world better with a sweater on Friday 13 December by wearing a Christmas jumper for the day and giving £1 or more to Save the Children

A donation of just £1 really can make the difference between life and death.
Your money could pay for nine sachets of oral rehydration treatment for children suffering from deadly diarrhoea.
The difference you could make is amazing, so why not team up with friends or colleagues to raise even more?
Reach £95 and you could pay for a midwife’s training to help ensure babies are delivered safely in the poorest parts of the world.

Which i think is a great cause and £1 is so little, but can mean so much to those children.

Anyway, i've never had a Christmas Jumper before, ive always thought thery were a bit garish and dare i say tacky, but i can accross this one from New Look and i just had to have it! It costs £27.99

I've had so many compliments on it today, and it is so warm and cosy and fluffy and soft.  But it doesnt shed and it doesnt itch - all in all the perfect Christmas Jumper!  I think i will be living in this over the winter period!  The sequins are very delicate, but they have been double stiched, so hopefully by washing it inside out and on a handwash setting i shouldnt lose too many sparkles!

OOTD

Getting very festive in the office

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and to those of you who haven't put your decorations up - do them today!  Its tradition!

Riu Palace Bavaro

This post is a bit delayed, but i just saw a photo of our hotel on Instagram and thought i would tell you all about it! We stayed at the Riu Palace Bavaro from the 30 August for 2 weeks, booking through Thomson.

Now, where to start. We had originally booked the Riu Bambu, but after reading some pretty shockingly bad reviews, we paid Thomson to upgrade to the Palace Bavaro. And I’m really glad we did. We checked out the Bambu one day, and it is not a patch, NOT A PATCH on the Palace Bavaro! If you can afford the extra £900 to go to the Palace Bavaro and you are considering the Bambu, please book the Palace Bavaro. Obviously we didn’t eat, drink, use the facilities at the Bambu, but just by looking at the place, the impression we got was not a good one.

Airport
We paid for Premium seats with Thomson, and this must have been why we got Premium Gatwick. You skick the massive check in queue and Premium have their own check in. Once you’ve dropped your bag off, you go to Premium Security, there was hardly anyone ahead of us, and we went straight through. The whole process must have taken 10 minutes – that’s what you want so early in the morning! Straight through to duty free (and a glass of bubbly at the Caviar bar!)

Champagne at 7am at the Caviar bar LGW

Flights
Both outbound and inbound were brilliant. As I mentioned, we travelled Premium through Thomson and I would highlt recommend this if you are flying long haul. You get a bigger seat, more leg room, you don’t have to pay for head phones, you have your own TV in the seat in front of you, you can chose what you want to watch from a good selection, the food is great (for plane food) you choose your main course off a menu, real cutlery, glass glasses, pillow, blanket, unlimited free drinks (apart from champagne), brilliant service both ways, no delays, the 8.5 hours passed in the blink of an eye while you are watching some films and drinking a few holiday beverages!

On the flight - G&T's and Bloody Marys all the way!

Transfers
As the Riu Palace Bavaro is part of Thomsons A La Carte range of hotels, you do not get a coach transfer, you get a private taxi (both ways) and what a joy that is! No having to sit on a coach and stop at a number of hotels before you get to yours. Straight in the taxi (the driver is waiting in the terminal with you name and
hotel on a sign) and straight off to the hotel.

A bit tipsy at Punta Cana airport

Arrival at the hotel
All the Riu hotels are situated on one complex quite close together, as we drove up to the Palace Bavaro, it is a lovely large modern building, within excellently kept grounds, everything is so clean and tidy. The gardeners work SO hard all day long. We were greeted in Reception and immediately were checked in, given a map of the hotel, our room key and pool towel cards and our bags taken off us (which we taken to our room for us). Reception speak fantastic English. We then made our way up to our room and our bags followed us about 5 minutes after we got there. This might be a good point to mention about tipping. Although tipping isn’t mandatory, we felt like we wanted to tip. And this was recognised by your servers, and they can’t do enough for you. They can’t do enough for you anyway, but if you tip, they know that you appreciate all what they do for you. We took US Dollars away with us, and we took to start off with $80 in $1 bills (we spent a total of $130 on tips for the 2 weeks we were there) Which is nothing really in the grand scheme of things. As a general rule we tipped the bell boys $5, the taxi driver $10, every time we got a round of drinks we tipped our server $1, left $2 at breakfast lunch and dinner, and if the pool servers got us a drink we gave them $2.

Rooms
As standard, the rooms are suites. It is ALL open plan including the bathroom. (The loo and shower is enclosed in their own separate cubicles but that is it) There are double sinks, a Jacuzzi bath in the middle of the room that we took advantage of most days. We were allocated a room with 2 double beds pushed together, which we didn’t mind (you get 2 weeks of decent sleep haha) flat screen wall mounted TV, sofa, coffee table and table & 2 chairs. On the balcony there are 2 chairs and a little table. Our view over looked the sandy area with tables, chairs, hammocks, day beds with the evening entertainment area just beyond that. The rooms are incredible, very modern, décor is white, pink and purple, with coloured glass bricks. There are optics in the room (bottles of beefeater gin, Smirnoff vodka, rum and whiskey), a fridge which is restocked every few days with water, soft drinks and beer, and there is a filter coffee machine which does 2 big mugs of coffee. We had this every morning before going to breakfast. Shower is an excellent pressure, there is a hairdryer in the room which I used every day, and my GHD’s worked no problem. Take the round 2 pin plugs with you.

The huge jacuzzi bath in our room
Our room!

Restaurants
The main buffet restaurant – Monte Cristo You dine in here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You also have the option of dining at the restaurant by the pool for lunch (that’s where we ate most days, or some days they do a BBQ on the beach for lunch) There is so much choice, wide ranges of fresh salads, lots of fruit, breakfast you can have omelettes made for you, eggs cooked any way, full English, cereals, porridge, waffles, pancakes, breads, cakes, pastries, meats, cheeses, yoghurt, fresh juices. The waiters bring you your tea/coffee/champagne (for breakfast!!!!) and you can call them over as many times as you like for re-fills.

Lunch at the buffet again so much choice, fruit, salads, fresh fish, chicken, meats, rice, chips, pizza, hot dogs, beef burgers etc, even had a gorgeous seafood paella one lunch (which my waiter brought me over a wash bowl for my fingers and a glass of bubbly without me asking!)

One of the buffet selections

Dinner again so much choice, there is a great pasta station which they cook fresh pasta for you and add your choice of sauce which was amazing, best spag bol ever!! They have local Dominican food, such as goat stew which was so tasty and melt in the mouth, then all the usual buffet foods, we never got bored.

We also tried out all of the speciality restaurants, which you have to book for in the morning, and you can book a few days in advance, we never had a problem booking a restaurant if we wanted one. There is a Steak Restaurant (which is also the pool side restaurant for lunch), Krystal (fine dining – this was my favourite), Geisha (Japanese – amazing) and an Italian (was ok, nothing special) It was our anniversary and my birthday while we were out there and we booked speciality restaurants for both those evenings, both nights were incredible. Such amazing food, well presented, lovely service, you really felt like you were eating out when you dined at those restaurants.

Me in the fine dining restaurant - Krystal

Bars
There is a swim up pool bar which is refreshing of an afternoon, an indoor sports bar which is about -10 degrees (well air-conditioned haha), the Daiquiri bar which is in the hotel lobby – had a yummy chocolate martini in there, and the evening bar next to the stage where the entertainment happens of an evening. Real glasses are used everywhere apart from around the pool. We didn’t have any problem with the alcohol, we didn’t think it was watered down (the champagne seems to be VERY low alcohol though) my only grumble is that they don’t have Malibu/or equivalent. I’m in the Caribbean and can’t get a coconut rum – whats that about!!

Lovely glasses in the bars

Evening Entertainment
The evening entertainment was so-so. What you’d expect while you are on holiday. Easy to watch, but nothing special. A couple of the shows are really good though. We went to the Casino at Riu Macao a few nights which was really good fun and spent a few dollars (and won some!) on the roulette table. Drinks are free in there as well as long as you are playing. We also went to the disco Pacha on our last night which ok when they were playing songs that you knew!! It seemed to be quite local, and the later it got, the more the workers appeared and the music changed. There is nothing else to do really. But we didn’t mind, we ate quite late, had a few drinks, watched the show and went to bed, waking up every day fresh as a daisy to enjoy the day ahead.

At Pacha Disco!

Day Entertainment
Now, this would be my only criticism of the hotel. Don’t get me wrong, the entertainment staff work really hard, all day and in the evening, but what they do during the day is the same EVERY day, you could set your watch by it. And they music they play is the same EVERY day, there seems to be something going on all the time. There sometimes seems to be no escape from it. The hotel is situated right on the beach, and the pool is right on the beach so you can hear the music where ever you are. There are also a few of the entertainment team (I name no names) that are really annoying! Like really try and bug you into taking part (I’m not a joiner, I just like to be left along and read my book or snooze) and one of them (after we had turned down an offer to join in with something) mad some comment about us wasting our holiday by not joining in! Hmmm, not impressed with that! We’ve paid ££££ for this holiday, I’ll do what I want thank you!

Lunch and dancing on the beach

Facilities
Pool – there is one pool that you are able to use (the other pool is for the VIP villas only), but it is clean, cool and just what you want. Also has a good design, pleasing to the eye.
Spa – I had a manicure and an OPI gel overlay, last really well and cost $35 not overly excessive
Gym – 4 treadmills, 2 cross trainers, 1 stepper, 1 bike and some weight machines (3), well air-conditioned, towels provided and water (I went a few times)
Beach – is lovely and clean, white sand, beautiful turquoise warm water, but the sea is choppy! Big waves. I have to say that I prefer the beaches in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. As the water is calmer, there isn’t as much seaweed etc floating around in the water and on the beach itself.

The main pool area

Weather
We travelled in hurricane season, the first 5 days were beautiful clear skies, 30+ degrees, bit of wind, scattered clouds with a few afternoons of full on rain, but the next 4 days were torrential back to back rain and the temperature dropped. We were told this was because we had got the tail end of a storm that hit Mexico. After that the weather picked up and went back to how it was at the beginning of our trip. But with a few showers of rain in the afternoon that went as quickly as they came. I have to say that I got the best tan I’ve had in a long time, and I’m quite fair.

Husband & I in the sea

Never seen rain like it!

General
We didn’t take any trips so we can possibly comment on that, but what I can say is that they are very expensive. I think parasailing on the beach was $80 per person. In fact the area is very expensive. We ran out of shower gel and bought some in the hotel shop and it was $9 USD. Gifts are really expensive – like $5 dollars for a fridge magnet! There is a few gift shops, a pharmacy, tobacconist on Caribbean Street just behind the hotel. A carton of 200 cigarettes Marlborough Menthol was $39. Knowing a little Spanish will get you a long way, it is very appreciated. Punta Cana airport is a little chaotic, lots of queuing and it is really hot in there! But there is an open section for smoking. There is also a Wendy’s! We bought a double cheeseburger meal, and a kids meal (for me) and it cost $15.

The Lobby & Reception area

So if you are looking for somewhere to go in the Caribbean for a couple of weeks of relaxing then this is the place to go - amazing holiday, i'm jealous of you all already!
